Dr Barry D. Steben

Dr Barry Steben is a scholar of Chinese and Japanese languages and thought with a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. His did his doctoral research in the Department of Chinese Philosophy at the University of Tokyo. He has taught at the University of Western Ontario, National University of Singapore, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Shanghai University of Foreign Studies, where his teaching focused on translation and art history. His publications are listed on Academia.edu, and some can be read there.

Barry received high-level choral training as a member of the Singapore Symphony Chorus, the Singapore Lyric Opera, the Hong Kong Oratorio Society, the Hong Kong Chamber Choir (Baroque), the Hong Kong Bach Choir, the Taipei Oratorio Society, the Shanghai International Choral Society, the Shepherds Ensemble (Renaissance choral music), and the Malaspina Choir (Nanaimo). In Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai he also studied voice with professional opera singers and participated in high-quality church choirs.

Having moved to Victoria in July 2015, Barry has sung with the Victoria Choral Society, Vox Humana, and the St. Barnabas Church Choir. He has studied voice with Kathryn Whitney, Kathleen Brett, and Nathan McDonald at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Barry was a singer on The Dichterleibe Project in 2016 and The Schöne Müllerin Project, 2017.
