Derek Smith began playing piano at age five but stopped in his early teens, only to pick up the piano again almost a decade later. After almost a decade at the University of British Columbia Chemistry Department, he has moved on to being a chemist in Canada’s growing cannabis industry.
While he keeps himself busy with curling, running and an occasional skydive, Derek has somehow always been able to find time for music. Derek actively participates in various music festivals in the Lower Mainland, often performing lesser known pieces such as those written for piano and boombox or pieces to be performed with only one hand.
His musical interests include Romantic and 20th & 21st century works, as well as a strong interest in repertoire written for left hand only. His favourite composers include Alkan, Busoni, Godowsky and Rachmaninov.
Derek was a pianist on The Winterreise Project in 2015, The Dichterleibe Project in 2016, and The Schöne Müllerin Project, 2017. He is also a member of Vancouver’s amateur piano group, Piano Cantabile.
Derek currently studies piano in Vancouver with Dr. Corey Hamm.
